Lean on Me Guide to Great Word of Mouth Marketing

Lean On Me Bill Withers

Everyone likes good times.

When things are going great it’s easy to be nice to your customers, and treat them well.  They’re happy, you’re happy, and there is a lot to talk about with all of the excitement.

But what about when things are bad?

Many times your customer is stuck in a situation that they can’t change.  They’re alone, without resources, and just have to stick things out.

So what can you do?  Stick it out with them, and help them out.  Build a brand they can lean on.

Long after the good times people remember those who were there for them when times were tough.  Outside of your business customers face a lot of those tough times.  You can look for the intersect when your services can help them out.

Quick Example Marketing Ideas

Cell Phone Companies/Carriers

People stuck in situations often call their friends and family to let them know what’s going on and to keep them company.  This drains their battery life quickly, especially if they’re stuck for a long time.

Cell phone companies/carriers could stick it out with their customers by having free charging stations in airports, when flights are delayed or cancelled, and in hospitals, when family is sticking by a loved one and doesn’t want to leave to get a charge.

Rush Hour Blues

Commuters stuck in traffic are frustrated and bored.

Local entertainment venues could sponsor comedy hours on radio during ‘rush hour’ traffic times.  Drivers receive free entertainment, become less stressed, and remember the local comedy club the next Friday night on the town.

Lean On Me Word-of-Mouth Action Steps

1. Think of your ideal customer and imagine them living out their day, week, month, and year.

2. Ask yourself what might be some big or everyday challenges they face?

3. Look for the ‘lean on me’ intersect where your services or product can make it easier for them to make it through.

4. Go do it.

This is how you can create great word-of-mouth marketing and drive customer loyalty.
